Everyday Wisdom #57

Worry beads (or prayer beads) can help you during meditation if you find it difficult to sit and focus your thoughts and breathing.

As you sit, hold the beads in your right hand, and move one bead at a time with your thumb.

Co-ordinate the movements with your breathing:

Move the bead as you exhale.

Then pause at the space between the beads.. enjoying the silence at the end of the out-breath.

Upon inhaling, lift your thumb onto the next bead.

Continue with each breath.

  3. Using a brief affirmation along with can also be helpful, e.g.

    “I breathe in others’ pain
    And breathe out peace and joy again.”
